A Healthy Colon

  • A healthy colon or large bowel is essential to an efficiently working gastrointestinal system, and our body as a whole.
  • When one segment of your digestive system isn’t working correctly, it can interfere with the overall process of breaking down food and removing waste from the body.
  • A lot of us don’t give much thought to our Colon until we experience problems with it,
  • when we experience different, uncomfortable symptoms within our Colon, it can negatively effect our digestive system and therefore our health and wellbeing as a whole
  • for example, when your colon is not functioning as it should,
  • stool can become too hard and constipation may result. Constipation can leave you feeling uncomfortable and bloated. It can also cause anal fissures and hemorrhoids.
  • Or diarrhoea may develop leading to a loss of electrolytes, such as sodium, magnesium, and potassium. An imbalance in electrolytes can cause a variety of problems

Common Colon related Conditions

  • Some Common Colon related conditions are:

Diverticulitis

  • Diverticula are small, bulging pouches or sacs that develop in the inner lining of the colon and grow through the muscular layer of the colon. When the pouches become inflamed, the condition is called diverticulitis

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

  • Chrohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease

Crohn’s disease

  • Crohn’s disease is a chronic condition that causes swelling of the digestive tract. Although it often effects  the small intestine, Crohn’s disease can also effect the colon.

Ulcerative colitis

  • Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation and sores in the inner lining of the colon. The severity of the disease may depend on how much of the colon is affected.
  • The long term effects of these conditions can create great illness within the body, mentally, physically, emotionally and energetically

The Gut Microbiome or Intestinal Flora

  • Our intestinal tract is host to trillions of microorganisms and their genetic material, these microorganisms which are mainly bacteria are essential to maintain health and wellbeing within our digestive tract and our entire system.
  • The gut microbiota helps with digestion, metabolism, immune function and brain health, there is a lot of research been carried out currently, some studies relate to the gut - brain connection, the connection between gut health and immunity etc.
  • These microorganisms start to populate the gut as a foetus in mother’s womb,
  • When you’re born, there are many factors that influence the types of bacteria that will live and flourish in your gut,
  • the health of your parents, vaginal delivery, or Caesarean section, your environment as an infant, if you’re breast or bottle-fed.
  • As you develop other factors play a role like, diet, stress, genetics, illness, medical intervention and drugs,
